Configuring Arbor Behaviour to Work with Edulink One

Arbor behaviour can be set up with or without behaviour points, depending on how your school would like to manage behaviour incidents.

Firstly, to set up behaviour types in Arbor go to Students > Behaviour > Setup.

Behaviour Setup

Ensure you are in the Types tab and click + Add.

Adding a Behaviour Type

Include a name for the behaviour type and a brief description if you choose. Additionally, you must select a severity for the behaviour.

The severity determines whether the behaviour is classed as negative, positive (an Achievement in Edulink One) or neutral. You can assign points to behaviour types using workflows.

Notifications set up here do not impact Edulink One.

Points Scales

To set up a point scale for Arbor, go to the Points Awards tab in Behaviour Setup.

Point Awards tab

Click +Add to set up a points scale. The directionality can be positive (merits, credits), negative (demerits) or neutral (usually a 0 point value).

Furthermore, you can set up the opening balance of points for your learners, the reset cycle (termly, yearly), as well as the minimum and maximum award points for the behaviours linked to the scale.

Edulink One will not take into account the fields related to the Arbour Parent Portal.

Once you have set up the initial point award scale, you can select a reason or attribute which will be used to award the point.

Select the scale to add reasons/attributes for your points.

Select the Point Award Scale you would like to add points to

Next, click Manage Point Award Scale to add your reasons/attributes for points.

Select Manage Point Award Scale

Add an attribute or reason in the scale by selecting +Add.

Add a reason/attribute

Write the name of the reason or attribute and prescribe a number of points associated with it. This can be in a positive direction if you would like to award merits, credits, achievements or the like. For behaviour, your attributes or reasons can be in a positive or negative direction (demerits or a cumulative behaviour point system). Lastly, the points can also be neutral, which is a value of 0 for behaviours or achievements that will not accumulate points. This depends on the type of scale you have created and its purpose.

Awarding Behaviour Points to Students: Points Award Scale Method

Behaviour points can be added from Arbor into Edulink in two ways. You can add behaviour points directly to the learner through the point scales (e.g. Credits, Behaviour Points, etc.) you have created or through an Incident that requires a workflow to add points.

To add a behaviour point using a behaviour scale, go to your student’s profile and select Behaviour.

Student profile/ behaviour

Select the scale you would like to use to add a behaviour (demerit) point or achievement (credit)to a student and select +Add.

+Add to award/deduct points

Select the reason/attribute for which you are awarding or deducting the point, and fill in the remaining details regarding the point award or deduction.

Award/ Deduct points fields

Lastly, select the Award/deduct points button to add them to the student’s behaviour profile.

Please note that any update to points in Arbor may take a few minutes to appear in Edulink One. This is the same as points added in Edulink One being written to Arbor.

Behaviour Workflows and Incidents

Incidents in Arbor can have an automatic workflow or a custom workflow, which is based on a specific behaviour type.

To create a workflow, go to Students > Behaviour > Behaviour Setup > Automatic Incident Workflows > Incident Levels and Behaviour Types.

Incident Workflows

To link points with behaviour types for incidents, you can use either an Automatic Incident Workflow, which is based on the severity assigned to a behaviour type, or you can create a Custom Workflow based on a behaviour type itself.

Automatic Incident Workflows

To adapt an Automatic Incident Workflow, select the workflow to manage the workflow options.

Workflow options (automatic workflow)

To add points to an automatic incident workflow, select the Add/deduct points option. This will automatically assign points based on the severity assigned to each behaviour type.

If the points are not configured in ‘automatic incident workflow’, then they will not be assigned to behaviours or achievements. This must be configured, and the behaviour type must have a severity (even if this is neutral) for behaviour points to be added.

Select the Point Award Scale you are basing your points on. Then, select the number of points assigned to this incident workflow. In this instance, a Level 3 Negative Severity Incident Workflow will deduct -3 points from the student.

Lastly, choose whether you would like to allow staff permission to add or deduct points when adding an incident of this level. Save your changes.

Add/Deduct Points for Automatic Incident Workflows

This will automatically assign points to an incident when you select the behaviour, as long as the behaviour type has a severity. This will appear in the relevant Point Award Scale selected in the Automatic Incident Workflow.

Custom Workflows for Behaviour Types

Custom Workflows for a behaviour type may have aspects that differ from the Automatic Incident Workflow based on severity. For example, you might decide to award -2 points for a swearing behaviour type even though the severity might be -1.

A custom workflow will override the automatic incident workflow.

Go to the Behaviour Types tab and click +Add to create a custom workflow.

You can edit a custom workflow by selecting it.

Give the workflow a name and select the behaviour type it’s in relation to. Click Next.

Set up the custom workflow for the behaviour type by filling in the workflow options. To add/deduct points, select the Add/deduct points option.

Select the Point Award Scale and then the number of points that will be awarded to the incident. Finally, select whether you would like staff to be able to add/deduct points when they log an incident relating to this behaviour type. Click Save.

When logging an incident for a student, if you select the behaviour type associated with the custom workflow, the points will appear in the relevant point award scale.

Once you have created your point scales in Arbor, you need to run a sync in Edulink One to import the scales into the Behaviour Settings. The same is required for the Achievement Tab in the Administration settings.

To view the points associated with each scale within Edulink, ensure the scales are ticked in Behaviour and Achievement, and the settings are saved before the points appear.

Adding Historic Points to Arbor from SIMS

Arbor does not migrate points from SIMS; however, it does migrate behaviour logs.

To add historical behaviour points to Arbour, you need to set up a point scale and ensure that the maximum points range is set to the maximum number of points you have awarded a student this academic year.

You then must set up your reasons or attributes for awarding historic points.

Please see the following article: https://support.arbor-education.com/hc/en-us/articles/4410652599453-Add-historic-behaviour-points-and-initial-points-balances#h_01HET59QXN0JNV5K25D4P2S0R7

After completing the setup, you need to run a sync in Edulink One to import your scale into the Behaviour and Achievement tabs.

Next, add the points to the student or group of students with the same number of points, then save the points in Arbor.

Awarding the historic points to a student

You need to ensure the relevant point scale is selected in Edulink One’s behaviour settings for the points to display.
